my approach to design is based on the concept of “romantic modernism” where i reference and incorporate elements of the past while celebrating the simplicity and minimalism of modern design. materials such as stone, wood and steel are allowed to age in a natural and maintenance-free manner and then placed in the context of simple and clean modern space. with this dual approach to design my residences achieve a warmth and character of traditional design combined with the excitement of modernism.

i stay personally involved throughout the design process and construction of each home. completing the plans is only the beginning. on site, i help resolve questions large and small so the finished home reflects the original design.

1. write an inspiring brief
a well-written sentence can be an inspiring brief. a creative image or metaphor helps me understand what you want your home to feel like. think about the spaces that appeal to your inner romantic or your sense of wonder.
the home in la cresta shown here was designed for “a modern-day cowboy.” that brief inspired pioneer fort walls, a 200-year-old mesquite gate in the courtyard, and a steel hitching post for the owner’s horses.
2. consider combining styles
two different design styles can work together. if you and your partner have different tastes, you do not have to choose one over the other. the design can bring both perspectives into a cohesive home.
the owners of the rancho santa fe home shown here wanted both traditional and contemporary elements. steel pavilions reflect the husband’s modern aesthetic. mediterranean forms reflect the wife’s traditional preference. together, they create a home that expresses both personalities.
3. trust your designer
your home should reflect you. as your designer, i may suggest ideas you have not considered that still fit your tastes. my role is to guide you through those choices and help bring your vision to life.
the laguna beach home shown here draws inspiration from mediterranean coastal villages. the owners loved the way buildings gather along narrow streets. i recreated that feeling with a cluster of spaces separated by a glass-enclosed “street,” bringing the village concept into the home.
