UNIQUE DESIGN PROCESS
I begin each home design by experimenting with physical models. This hands-on process lets me explore shape, texture and proportion before moving to computer drawings. It is central to the romantic modernism that guides my residential design work.
MASSING MODELS
I typically make 5 to 20 massing models for each project. These early studies help me compare the home’s overall shape and proportions.
WOOD MODELS
I build models from wood to introduce warmth and emotion into the design. Working with a physical material helps me judge how the forms relate to one another.
Model Making
PURE SIMPLE FORM
Models help me simplify a design to its essential forms. The studies shown here trace the changes that led to the final design.
FINISHED MODEL
The finished model brings together what I have learned from the early massing studies and later refinements. Each step helps create architecture with simple forms and lasting character.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
I then develop the design in 3D computer models. At this stage, I refine the exterior and develop the interior architecture.
HANDS ON
I stay involved throughout construction, addressing questions large and small. This hands-on approach helps carry the design from the model into the finished home.
